Prisoners of Ank’Harel
In Ank’Harel, Vox Machina comes face to face with Anna Ripley… and Orthax. But only escape her clutches to stand accused of murder! While Vox Machina stands trial, Scanlan runs into his daughter. The clock is ticking as Scanlan tries to save his friends and his relationship with Kaylie.
Percy’s past comes back to haunt him again as he finds himself in the hands of Anna Ripley and her new patron Orthax. It’s a wonderfully intense scene between the characters and showcases one of the more interesting elements of who Percy is and what he regrets when it comes to his legacy. At the same time, the rest of the team go back to the scene of the time to try to find out where Percy might be.
The episode is an interesting and entertaining mix of genres with Percy dealing with his past and the temptations of the powers he once gave into as well as Scanlan trying his best to connect with the daughter who hates him. Keyleth and Vax have some interesting tension in the episode and there is an awesome murder mystery at play that reveals some complicated feelings from one of the characters. I also really loved seeing Grog have a sweet moment that showcased his abilities beyond comic relief.
Unfortunately, things get complicated for Vox Machina as the murder they’re investigating has ties to the leader of Ank’Harel and their guards are on the hunt for the team. It’s a fun and visually thrilling chase through the city that will bring the team back together to face something more dangerous. Something that could leave one of them changed forever as punishment.
I loved the tension throughout the episode and how well balanced it was between the different parts of the story. Even though a lot of the episode was dedicated to Percy, the Scanlan story was tense in a different yet satisfying way. Percy’s story takes a dark and intense turn that I was not expecting, but was extremely satisfied by and I loved seeing Pike in more comedic moments. The episode reveals something that, as a Critter, made me smile from ear to ear as the group is given their next mission and made me excited for the next episode.
